Observation Summary

Observe someone's behaviour. Which of their CARDS might be in Red?

How does this work?

Debugging reads another person's behaviour through the lens of needs. It asks: which of their CARDS might be in Red?

How to Play

  1. Observe the behaviour (distress, withdrawal, aggression, etc.).
  2. Query: "Which CARDS might be in Red for them right now?"
  3. Intervention: "What do they need? How can we help move that need toward Green?"

When to Use

  • When someone is upset and you want to understand why
  • When behaviour seems irrational or disproportionate
  • When resolving conflict or misunderstanding
  • When supporting someone through difficulty

What It Reveals

Behaviour that looks hostile often signals unmet needs. A child who refuses to participate may have Competence or Safety in Red. A colleague who withdraws may have Dignity or Relatedness in Red. Debugging treats behaviour as signal, not character.
